People always ask me, “How did you get started with oils.” Most of the time I opt to give them the short answer, “About 7 years ago when I attended my first Essential Oils 101 class.” I’m going to give you the long answer, the passion filled answer.
From when I could start eating, we were eating garden vegetables. This way of life was engrained in me. When you wanted green beans, you went to the garden. When you wanted a tomato, you went to the garden. You get the point. Back then this was normal for me, now it seems people are trying to get “back to this way” even when their life didn’t start this way. “All natural” is a catchy phrase these days. I suppose sometime through many years of school, I lost this notion getting caught up in ALL the things…fast food, cheap makeup, synthetically made skincare. I always promised myself that when I had time (I guess meaning no more pressing tests) I would do better. I thought I knew something back then, but my knowledge only skimmed the surface.
I was true to myself in that when I had my own home, I started growing herbs and vegetables, I started making my own skincare products starting with simple chapstick, and I got chickens. I thought I was off to a good start when I went to a “general” store and bought my first essential oil, lavender, to put in a lotion base. I guess you could say my mind was already primed when attending my first essential oil class. From there, I started researching quality of oils and how to use oils purposefully, and my mindset shifted from considering oils as fragrance to considering oils as healing plants. Full circle from that little garden that my grandparents had.
As I learned, I embraced the idea of “If you know better, do better.” I continued to trade out toxic make-up, cleaners, air fresheners for homemade and then started teaching classes. Classes on EVERYTHING. These classes turned into a full-fledged oily community, The Bluebonnet Oilers.
This journey has taken my family many places physically, emotionally, and literally many places. One of the most amazing experiences was to witness Sacred Sandalwood being grown on Young Living’s farm in Hawaii. Witnessing the process of Seed to Seal right in front of your eyes is, well, eye-opening. Getting to inhale the sandalwood chips, seeing the distillation process, then witnessing the oil go straight into the bottle. Now that is pure, 100% essential oil.
Although the opportunity is there to see farm’s across the world planting and growing “the right way,” there will always be a special place in my heart for Utah, and the simple lavender farm. This is where convention is held and a farm day is included, and I had the pleasure of going back during Silver Retreat. ALWAYS a pure pleasure!
